While in school, Lenny worked in a number of restaurants and purchased his first restaurant, The Naropa Cafe, in 1992. At the cafe, Lenny deepened his knowledge of cooking, and his lifelong appreciation of the ethnic cuisine of other cultures was sparked. In 1998, Lenny and Sara were selected to operate the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse, a gift to the city of Boulder from their sister city, Dushanbe, Tajikistan. The ornate, handcrafted Teahouse is the largest teahouse in the US, and is one-of-a-kind in the western hemisphere.

Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse

Always hoping to honor and highlight the creative and historic culture of Tajikistan and the Persian Empire, the Teahouse displays some traditional clothing, artifacts, and photos. From November to late January, 275,000 lights illuminate Boulder’s Central Park in front of the teahouse. Because this is a municipal building, it is open to the public, so you may pop in to admire the building without dining here. However, please be considerate of those enjoying their tea and meals in such a peaceful setting.

Insider’s Guide to the Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse

A message carved in the ceiling reads “artisans of ancient Khojand whose works are magical”. The partnership has been essential to making the teahouse one of the largest tourist attractions in Boulder. Boulder-Dushanbe Sister Cities fostered the project until members helped form the Boulder-Dushanbe Teahouse Trust with other community leaders. This arrangement was in keeping with city government sentiment that taxpayer funds should not be used for the endeavor. The teahouse was erected on city property and opened to the public in 1998."Oral history interview with David Grimm, 2009". Join the Museum of Boulder and The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse in celebrating the 25th anniversary of this community treasure.

First, Kodir mixed his secret blend of plaster, allowing it to cure to a specific consistency. Then he placed it on an easel and began the painstakingly slow process of carving the delicate material. Each panel is composed of a number of “tiles” that when put together create the whole.

The poem is notable for deep content and social sense, as well as rich composition and prominent poetic value. In addition to the funds received from lease payments, the city benefits by having a unique tenant able to provide culturally responsible management and operation of the teahouse. Approximately two-thirds of the annual lease payments are then used for major maintenance and improvements for aesthetic aspects of the building, which frees Three Leaf Concepts from having to reinvest in pricey upkeep costs. SARA STEWART MARTINELLIOwner, Director of Marketing & Communications, Clinical Herbalist, Professional Tea BlenderSara has a degree from the University of Colorado in Anthropology with a focus on ethnobotany and nutrition. She completed a two year program at the Rocky Mountain Center for Botanical Studies in 2002, and is a practicing clinical herbalist.

Keep reading to discover the unlikely story of how the teahouse came to Boulder. Who would operate it once open, and how — as a museum, teahouse or restaurant? The discussions took time, but eventually, thanks to a few stalwart champions of the project, the project came together at last. In 1987, on a visit to Boulder, Dushanbe’s mayor announced his plan to present Boulder with a Tajik chaikhona, a place to sip tea (chai), meet up with friends, play chess and enjoy light snacks. Over the next several years, a group of 40 Tajik artisans constructed, carved and painted a 1,700-square-foot teahouse in Dushanbe that, when finished, was valued at $750,000. In Central Asia, teahouses serve as gathering places where friends meet to talk or play chess over a cup of tea.

Take in the sights and smells of the market, have tea or lunch at the teahouse and visit the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA) next door. An internationally influenced and MICHELIN Guide-recognized menu is available for breakfast, lunch and dinner (and brunch on the weekends). Let your taste buds dance to the tune of a Moroccan Harisa chicken dish, a fragrant Tajikistan plov (rice dish) or a plate of spicy Indonesian peanut noodles. In the center of the teahouse dining room is the Fountain of Seven Beauties, where seven female figures evoke a famous poem by the 12th-century Persian poet Nizami Ganjavi.

We love to host large parties and private events, and we’ve been so fortunate to share so many important moments with our guests as they celebrate in the Teahouse. The Exterior of the Teahouse boasts hand crafted ceramic mosaic tiles and a roof border of exquisite beauty and craftsmanship. The rose gardens in front of the Teahouse include over 50 varieties of heirloom roses, which were first grown in Central Asia. In the 7th Century BC, the area we now know as Tajikistan was settled at the eastern periphery of the Persian Empire. Situated a bit south of the Silk Road trails, the area has seen invasions by Alexander the Great, Mongols, Arabs, Turks, and Russians. Today, Tajikistan, with a population of 7 million, is about the size of Iowa, and is bordered to the east by China, to the north by Uzbekistan and Kyrgystan, and to the south by Afghanistan.

The incredible hand carved plaster walls were carved here in Boulder during the construction of the Teahouse in 1998 by Kodir Rhakimov, one of the original artists who was visiting to help with the building of the building. The panels are meticulously carved using a sharp scalpel, and are some of the most traditional forms of Persian art at the Teahouse.

As the name suggests, tea is the raison d'être here, and the selection is comprehensive. From apple strudel and samosas to feijoada and plov (a buttery rice dish studded with chickpeas, dried fruit and grilled beef), the menu reads like a world explorer's diary. Naturally, tea time and afternoon tea are reason alone to visit, and the dessert selection is particularly tempting. Once here, they were repositioned together by Victor, who was visiting to help with construction. Inside the Teahouse are eight large, intricately carved white plaster panels, designed and executed by Kodir Rakhimov, whose contemporary oil paintings are framed by this art of Persian antiquity. Our Teahouse accurately reflects this artistic tradition that dates back nearly 2,000 years. The master woodcarvers, including Manon Khaidarov and Mirpulat Mirakhmatov who helped reassemble the Teahouse here, have carved their names in the ceiling. The artisans who have painted it have written their names on a green painted area above the entry to the kitchen.

At the western end of the Himalayas, its terrain is 93% mountainous, with peaks towering to 24,000 feet. Prior to being named capital to the Soviet Republic of Tajikistan in 1929, Dushanbe, which signifies Monday, was a village of 400 – 600 people and was the site of the weekly bazaar, held on Mondays. Dushanbe now has a population of 600,000 and its people are struggling with the aftermath of civil war following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. “The Seven Beauties is the 4th poem of Nizami Ganjavi’s “Khamsa, which means “Five Treasuries”.

On the proper day of the week, Bahram would dress himself in the appropriate color, and go to visit the wife that corresponded with the day. Each woman would relate to him a story from her native land and praise the attributes of her own color. All the tales are closely related to popular folklore and combine the scientific and philosophical views on the symbolic effects of the colors. The poem inspires honesty, virtue and kindness, while denouncing arrogance, villiany, greediness and treachery. And so, the princesses’ tales serve not only to entertain the Shah, but to ponder life and consider the secrets on the universe and human nature. Kodir carved the ganch during his visit to Boulder, and it took many months to complete the job.

He was welcomed back into the Three Leaf Family with the opening of Aji Latin American Restaurant (now closed) as a partner, and now supports all of the concepts in the Three Leaf Group. Afternoon Tea is one of our most popular offerings, with a traditional linen-draped table, a three-tiered serving tray with sweet and savory delicacies, and a pot of our premium tea. Carved in Tajikistan of Siberian cider, the 12 majestic columns are all hand carved and no two are alike. The 7 bronze statues of the Seven Beauties, characters in a traditional folk tale, were an exciting surprise when we opened the crates that the Teahouse was packed in. Today the Beauties make up the gorgeous central fountain of the Teahouse. Throughout the Teahouse, every ceiling square or alcove is painted differently with traditional Persian designs.

Both cities are about the same size, share the same latitude and have similar topography. The establishment of sister cities was a grassroots effort to connect people across cultures. A time for people to gather and talk over warm cups of tea, the Teahouse was a fitting gift to the city of Boulder. Forty Tajik artisans hand-made the teahouse over a period of two years, took it apart, and then packed the pieces into about 200 crates to be shipped to Boulder.

And once locals could see its intricate and colorful beauty on display, any lingering concerns turned to praise. In the central pool of the Teahouse there are seven hammered copper sculptures created by artist Ivan Milosovich. The life sized sculptures are based on a 12th century poem, “The Seven Beauties ” the 4th poem of Nizami Ganjavi’s “Khamsa”. They chronicle the adventures of Shah Bahram Goirr, son of Yargourd the 1st from the Sasanids dynasty. Nizami uses the well documented events to explore the themes of social justice, morality, and appreciation of nature.

The Importance of Scale and Proportion in Interior Design

proportion in design

Harmonious design isn’t happenstance; it’s a calculated orchestration of design elements. Explore how manipulating the relative size of elements can sway the mood of your work or how the golden ratio guides the eye with an almost magnetic pull. Figure out your square footage and ceiling height, to determine how much space you have for furniture and accessories. For example, if you have large windows your space will automatically feel open. This architectural feature will allow you to include more furniture. Even in small spaces, tall ceilings will make your space appear more expansive.

What is Proportion in Art — Definition and Examples

Even though art may not necessarily mimic real life, it often strives to do so, and the use of proportion is key in achieving this goal. It helps to create a sense of realism by providing elements with placement, and relative size that make them look more believable. Rene Magritte used proportion in his work to create contrast, emphasis and to explore the surreal. Artists can capture a sense of scale by using proportions in a composition.

Proportion and Materiality: A Delicate Balance

However, it’s important to understand the differences between the two. While all of the heads within the composition of the sculpture are in standard proportion to each other, the scale of the sculpture is large when compared to the viewer. It’s one more tool to help you create something that establishes the right emotional and visual tone with users.

Implementing the golden ratio

Aluminum screens, steel, and dark-colored wood are expertly combined, evoking a sense of lightness that contrasts the solid and void composition of the building. Out of proportion entails one or more elements of a subject to be too large or too small in proportion to the rest of the subject. The extent to which something is out of proportion depends on the artist's choices. Sometimes artists create a severely out of proportion subject as a means of stylistic exaggeration.

To maximize natural light in a room, designers can use window treatments that allow light to enter the space while still providing privacy. Sheer curtains or blinds are an excellent option for this purpose. Additionally, you can use mirrors to reflect natural light and make a room feel brighter and more spacious.

Standard proportion refers to proportions that are created correctly when compared to proportions that exist within reality. Standard proportion is important for artists looking to create realistic compositions. Da Vinci’s focus on standard proportion within the illustration is based on anatomical proportions from physical reality. Depending on an artist’s intentions, a composition can be created to appear more realistic to life or more stylized to an artist’s vision. Proportion is a principle of art that is relevant to any material, medium, or style.

Proportion can also be used in the design of packaging, advertising, and other brand collateral. The use of proportion can help create a consistent and cohesive brand image across all touchpoints, helping to reinforce a brand’s identity and message. Rhythm, a principle of design, has more complexity than the previous principles of repetition and pattern. Repetition and pattern are applied to the same element throughout a design. A canon is what artists use to create mathematical relationships that ensure perfectly proportioned forms.

Balance in Website Layouts

So that this principle of design is better understood, when looking at artwork, always pair proportion with scale. Proportion in design refers to the relative size of the elements in the design. While content width can fill up as much screen as its given, it’s generally not recommended to allow your content to span more than 52 characters per line. The 8pt Grid System was first introduced by Google’s Material Design specification. Essentially, you want to use a grid that is composed of 8 x 8 pt squares. As you design on top of this grid, you’ll want to ensure that all elements snap to the grid.

The eye appreciates a proportionate design, and it adds to the look. Correct proportions can be achieved through the repetition of shapes, colors, or textures. In achieving the right proportionate balance, personal style and preference are also important. Movement can be created with rhythm when using a variation of an element repeatedly. Using curved lines and diagonal lines creates more movement compared to straight lines. Color can help enhance the feeling of movement, juxtaposing high and low key colors to create energy.

ACA Architects’ masterful approach has transformed this property into a true gem, a place where the homeowners can indulge in the ultimate luxury of refined living. To date, the company has not seen evidence of exfiltration of materials such as doctors’ charts or full medical histories among the data. Scale and proportion, two very common interior design terms, are what make a home or room warm and inviting.

You should not place undue reliance on forward-looking statements, which speak only as of the date they are made. We do not undertake to update or revise any forward-looking statements, except as required by law. “Proportion” often refers to the shape of an item and how it relates to other things in the room.

However, it can also be used incorrectly and lead to unintentional effects. Let’s dive into the different types of proportions that exist within art. In art, scale refers to the size of one whole object in relation to another whole object. Artists use large scale art and small scale art to create different effects on a viewer through their perception of size.

When the scale is off, the space can feel unbalanced and uncomfortable. Scale also helps to create a sense of hierarchy within a room, guiding the eye to the most important elements. Achieving balance through proportion involves using the right scale and placement of furniture, decor, and accessories. Proportions should not only be visually pleasing but also practical and functional.

Two design elements are in a golden ratio if their ratio is equivalent to their sum ratio to the larger element. The way proportions are used to influence the appearance of realism or stylism of each element. The accuracy in return affects where the viewer’s attention is directed and how appealing the entire design looks. Proportion can be described as the relationship between the weight, size, and aspect of different design elements. It refers to each element’s dimensions and how they correspond with each other in the overall composition. Below are some tips for creating the correct scale and proportion in your room or home.

This visual equilibrium captures attention without overwhelming the viewer. In a composition, proportion refers to the relationship between objects with reference to their size and visual weight. It is one of the easier design principles to understand that mainly focuses on the comparison of shapes and sizes of elements in relation to another. Proportion is important because it helps to create a harmonious and visually pleasing space. When the elements in a room are proportionate to each other, they work together to create a sense of balance and unity.

One organizer complained that the White House Correspondents’ Assn. — which represents the hundreds of journalists who cover the president — largely has been silent since the first weeks of the war about the killings of Palestinian journalists.

This is yet another rematch from 2022, with Democratic former federal prosecutor Will Rollins once again hoping to unseat Rep. ‘Stormy weather’: Biden skewers Trump at White House correspondents’ dinner

"We've been patient, but our patience is wearing thin," Biden said, making a direct appeal to the 80 million people who he said were still unvaccinated. Vice President Kamala Harris will join Mr. Biden for the bilateral meeting with Zelenskyy at the White House, her office said. "To date, our funding has put more weapons in Ukrainian hands and more victories under their belt," Schumer said.

Still, last week’s deal to keep the government open through mid-November excluded the $13 billion in supplemental aid that the Biden administration sought last month, raising questions about just how long the U.S. could continue to send money to Ukraine. One of the few mentions came from Kelly O'Donnell, president of the correspondents' association, who briefly noted some 100 journalists killed in Israel's 6-month-old war against Hamas in Gaza. In an evening dedicated in large part to journalism, O'Donnell cited journalists who have been detained across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich in Russia and Austin Tice, who is believed to be held in Syria. As in the 13th District to the north, economic issues and inflation will likely be top of mind for these voters.

Biden said in a recent interview with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart that an invasion of Rafah by the Israel Defense Forces would be a “red line” for him, though he said he would never leave Israel’s side. "The president has repeatedly made the point that continuing military operations need to be connected to a clear strategic end game," Sullivan said. "The president told the prime minister again today that we share the goal of defeating Hamas, but we just believe you need a coherent and sustainable strategy to make that happen."

The most recent Quinnipiac University national poll for example, showed 16% of registered voters saying they would support Kennedy if the election were being held today. The annual event presents a great opportunity for comedians, and also a veritable minefield. With hundreds of protesters rallying against the war in Gaza outside the event and concerns over the conflict and humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the perils for journalists covering the conflict, the war hung over this year’s event. But speakers inside made only passing mention of the conflict despite some having to run a gauntlet of demonstrators. Whimsical Designs

This fun purple wallpaper features a gradient that adds just enough color to the room. Beige is one of those colors that gets a bad rep, but when used correctly it can totally transform a room. Pick a cooler beige that feels light and airy with a subtle pattern to keep your room modern and airy. While wallpaper can add visual interest, it can also add texture to a space that you can touch. Look for a textured wallpaper made from a material such as grasscloth to give your space a warm, cozy feel.

Deconstructed Palm Wallpaper

From small decorative accents to colors, textures and prints, every element of your home should be a reflection of your personal style. Whether you prefer subdued shades, simple textures or vibrant patterns, wallpaper is the perfect way to inject character into an interior — and, no space is off limits. To keep you inspired, we turned to design experts to learn more about the leading wallpaper trends for 2023. We love this monochromatic bedroom with blue accents and a subtle blue and white patterned wallpaper. Blue is a great color for a small space because it packs a punch.

Look for a wallpaper with flecks of gold or go all in on the metallic look with a bold, graphic pattern that also acts as artwork. You probably don't think much about how to decorate your ceiling, but this bird wallpaper will make you think again. Add a fun pop of color and pattern to your ceiling to give your room more depth and make it appear larger and higher. At Pixlr, we understand the importance of high-quality designs.

By contrast, Biden, who won 51% of the vote last time, knows that Trump’s core vote is solid. His campaign’s best bet is to sufficiently hold Biden’s vote down in the key swing states to allow 46% or 47% to prevail. “He was encouraged by Trump allies,” including Steve Bannon, Trump’s former top strategist, and “is being propped up” by big Trump donors, like Timothy Mellon, the banking heir who is by far Kennedy’s biggest contributor. In Idaho, which has some of the lowest vaccination rates in the country, officials said Tuesday they were allowing health care providers to begin rationing care to make scarce resources available to patients most likely to survive because of a severe shortage of staff, beds and equipment. Entering the summer, Biden promoted his success at getting Covid cases to the lowest level since the start of the pandemic and predicted 70 percent of adults would be vaccinated by Independence Day.

Biden’s order has directed the secretary of health to support research on Covid-19 treatments and increase support for critical care and long-term care facilities like nursing homes — which have been among the sites hit hardest by the pandemic. Biden’s order scrapped a batch of Trump-era executive actions that restricted how federal agencies make regulatory changes, including one measure requiring agencies to discard two regulations for every one proposed. White House officials said they hoped Biden’s pandemic response would restore Americans’ faith in government and make it easier to sell other aspects of his domestic agenda, like an ambitious infrastructure spending package. Biden also announced that he asked the Department of Labor to issue an emergency rule requiring all employers with 100 or more employees to ensure their workforce is fully vaccinated or require any unvaccinated workers to produce a negative Covid test at least once a week. The requirement could carry a $14,000 fine per violation and would affect two-thirds of the country's workforce, a senior administration official said. Noting the change of party control of the House in the coming weeks, when Republicans will take hold of the lower chamber, Zelenskyy said he is confident there will be bipartisan support for additional assistance to Ukraine.

‘Stormy weather’: Biden skewers Trump at White House correspondents’ dinner

The new package also includes hundred of thousands of mortars and artillery shells, dozens of armored vehicles and specialized kits that greatly enhance the effectiveness and accuracy of bombs dropped from fighter jets. The White House’s swipe at Trump and Republicans comes in the midst of a campaign between Biden and the ex-president. Trump has made anxieties about the immigration and the asylum system a central component of his pitch to voters, and surveys show voters trust Trump over Biden by wide margins on handling the border. The president made a grim speech about what he believes is at stake this election, saying that another Trump administration would be even more harmful to America than his first term.

Biden and senior officials monitored the firings and interception attempts in real time in the White House Situation Room. The officials said there was “relief” in the room once they saw that the missile defense efforts had succeeded. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre held a news briefing as the U.S. urged deescalation after it helped to thwart an attack by Iran on Israel. "One of the things that I do think that has been made clear to me, speaking of polling, is the public doesn't want me to be the President-senator. They want me to be the President, and let senators be senators," Biden said during a news conference to mark his first year in office. "It's one thing if it's a minor incursion and we end up having to fight about what to do and not do," Biden told reporters at an East Room news conference. "But if they actually do what they're capable of doing with the forces amassed on the border, it is going to be a disaster for Russia if they further invade Ukraine."

The other four races — which include the seats currently held by Reps. Josh Harder (D-Turlock), Mike Levin (D-San Juan Capistrano), Young Kim (R-Placentia) and Kevin Kiley (R-Rocklin) — are in Cook’s slightly less pliable “likely Republican” or “likely Democrat” categories. California’s importance in any strategy to win control of the House in the November 2024 election is one of the few things Republicans and Democrats agree on. California “is, along with New York, one of the two most important paths to potential Democratic control of the House,” said Dave Wasserman, senior editor and elections analyst for the nonpartisan Cook Political Report. While Republicans currently have a razor-thin majority in the House, partisan makeup of next year’s Congress will almost certainly be decided this November — at least in part — by a handful of hypercompetitive California races. "The toll exacted on us for merely fulfilling our journalistic duties is staggering," the letter states.

Employees working in health care facilities that receive Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement will also be required to be vaccinated, Biden said, a move that will impact 7 million workers at 50,000 health care providers. That opposition, and with Republicans poised to take control of the House next month, has led to uncertainty as to whether more aid packages for Ukraine would win approval from the next Congress. The visit by Zelenskyy, who will address lawmakers in a joint meeting Wednesday evening, comes as the Senate is moving toward a vote on final passage of the omnibus package, which includes $45 billion for Ukraine. Schumer noted the Ukrainian leader's arrival comes at a "crucial moment" for the Senate, and he urged his colleagues to complete their work swiftly. The U.S. has provided about $22 billion in military assistance to Ukraine alone since the war began, on top of tens of billions of dollars in financial and humanitarian assistance.

Protest organizers said they wanted to bring attention to the high numbers of Palestinian and other Arab journalists killed by Israel’s military since the war began in October. O’Donnell went on to list the scores of journalists who have been imprisoned across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich and Austin Tice. The families of those journalists were in attendance as they have been at previous dinners.

"I am in Washington today to thank the American people, the President and the Congress for their much-needed support. And also to continue cooperation to bring our victory closer," Zelenskyy wrote in a caption accompanying the photos. "I will hold a series of negotiations to strengthen the resilience and defense capabilities of Ukraine. In particular, we will discuss bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and the United States of America with US President Joseph Biden." "The Ukrainian people continue to inspire the world. I mean that sincerely. Not just inspire us but inspire the world with their courage and how they have [shown] the resilience and resolve for their future," the president said. "This visit to the United States became a historic one," the Ukrainian president said.

First, it asked about a Biden-Trump matchup and found Trump ahead 46%-44% — a result well within the survey’s margin of error. In 2020, by contrast, all the independent and third-party candidates combined took less than 1.8% of the vote. One reason it’s hard to guess how much support Kennedy will win this fall is that polls have a hard time measuring how much support he has now. Trump took a small lead in surveys during the last few months of the year, which he held until early spring.

As well as celebrating the writings of Bram Stoker, Mary Shelley, Edgar Allan Poe, H.P. Horace finished the house after Constance's death knowing it was what she would have wanted. Aware that Constance's spirit made the house come alive, Horace tried to keeping people away by pretending to hating them for their safety. On the day before Halloween, 12-year-old Dustin James "D.J." Walters documents his elderly neighbor, Horace Nebbercracker, stealing a little girl's tricycle and scaring her away from his house, one of many similar incidents that have occurred. That same day, D.J.'s parents leave for a convention, placing him in the care of his teenage babysitter Elizabeth, or Zee. Later, D.J.'s friend, Charles "Chowder" Peterson, loses his basketball on Nebbercracker's lawn; D.J. He appears to suffer a heart attack and is presumed dead by the duo as he is taken away in an ambulance.

This further arouses DJ’s suspicions about the house, and he calls Chowder to help him investigate. American film by Gil Kenan / From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In this film, 3 pre-teens (DJ Walters, Chowder and Jenny Bennett) discovered that an old man's house is really a living breathing monster. Monsters under the bed are scary enough, but what happens when an entire house is out to get you? Three teens aim to find out when they go up against a decrepit neighboring home and unlock its frightening secrets. Chowder engages the house in battle once more, while DJ and Jenny ascend a nearby crane, however, this time, Constance gets the upper hand and rips the excavator’s backhoe off, then eats the excavator.

They conclude that the heart must be the furnace and Chowder provides a cold medicine-filled dummy that should cause the house to sleep long enough for them to douse the furnace. Police Officers Landers and Lister thwart their plan and they are arrested when Landers finds the cold medicine stolen from Chowder's father's pharmacy inside the dummy. The house then eats the officers and their car in which DJ, Chowder and Jenny have been shut. It also represents, to the technology nerds in the audience, an interesting refinement of animation techniques.

DJ apologizes to Nebbercracker for his losses, but Nebbercracker thanks the kids for freeing him and his wife from being trapped for 45 years. Later, children in their Halloween costumes are lined up at the site of the house, where DJ, Chowder, and Jenny help return the toys to their owners. Jenny's mother picks her up, and DJ and Chowder go trick-or-treating, which they previously felt they were too old for. The trio consult Reginald "Skull" Skulinski, a supposed expert on the supernatural. They learn the house is a rare monster created when a human soul merges with a man-made structure, and that it can only be killed by destroying its heart.

Jenny then calls Officer Landers and Officer Lister, but does not believe their story. Later the trio seek advice from Skull who is claimed to be an expert on the supernatural. The only way to kill the house is to destroy its heart which it's source of life. They conclude that the heart must be the fireplace as DJ realises that the chimney has been smoking since Mr. Nebbercracker died.

This movie provides examples of:

Accompanying DJ to the house, Chowder disagrees with him about the house being haunted, and proceeds to go up to the house and ring the doorbell to show him there’s nothing to worry about. Doing so causes the house to awaken; its interior suddenly takes on a mouth/throat-like appearance, and the exterior also takes on a more threatening look. Chowder barely avoids being eaten and he and DJ retreat back to DJ’s house, where they spend the night keeping an eye on the house, though the house remains inactive. If I say that “Monster House” is the best child-friendly movie of the summer so far (“Ant Bully” and “Barnyard” will expand the competition in the next few weeks), it may sound like extravagant praise — or maybe like faint praise.

As the credits roll, the victims who were eaten by the house emerges from the hole. Bones finds out that Zee is now dating Skull, then Officer Landers and Officer Lister leave to "investigate" some of the trick-or-treating candy & the dog urinates on a nearby jack-o'-lantern enough to put out its flame. In the aftermath, the quartet gather at the house's still-intact basement, returning everything Nebbercracker stole to their rightful owners.

They fall into the basement and find a collection of toys accumulated from Mr. Nebbercracker's lawn, as well as a cage containing the body of Mr. Nebbercracker's wife encased in cement. Jenny wondered why Mr. Nebbercracker build a shrine if he murdered her. Chowder suggested that he felt guilty or something but DJ, determined to find our the truth knew that Mr. Nebbercracker was hiding something. DJ, Chowder and Jenny force the house to vomit them outside by grabbing its uvula. Mr. Nebbercracker arrived home alive and revealed that the house is possessed by his wife Constance. When he was young, Horace met Constance who was an unwilling member of a circus sideshow and fell in love with her despite her obesity.

The postures and gestures of DJ (Mitchell Musso) and his pals — a pudgy fellow named Chowder (Sam Lerner) and a preppy redhead named Jenny (Spencer Locke) — have an authentically loose and antic look. They seem like real kids, rather than like super-cute, big-headed cartoon moppets. Walters leave town for the weekend, leaving him in the care of his babysitter Zee. DJ has been spying on his elderly neighbor Mr. Horace Nebbercracker, who confiscates any item landing in his yard. After DJ's best friend Chowder loses his basketball on Nebbercracker's lawn, DJ is caught by Nebbercracker trying to recover it but the enraged owner apparently suffers a heart attack and is taken away by an ambulance.

Later, D.J.'s friend, Charles "Chowder" Peterson, loses his basketball on Nebbercracker's lawn; D.J. He appears to suffer a heart attack and is presumed dead by the duo as he is taken away in an ambulance. The house lures the officers closer and then attacks and eats both of them. Constance then feasts on the police car; DJ, Chowder, and Jenny are able to escape from the car, but are then trapped inside the house. And for the most part they talk and behave like real kids, too, or at least like characters drawn from the rich tradition of plucky, intellectually curious kiddie-lit heroes.

The trio see Horace with his wife Constance's ghost for the last time before she fades away. DJ apologises to him for the loss of his house and wife, but Mr. Nebbercracker thanks DJ and the kids for freeing him and Constance. That night, children in their Halloween costumes are lined up at the site of Mr. Nebbercracker's house where DJ, Chowder and Jenny help him return the toys to their owners. DJ and Chowder then go trick-or-treating which they previously thought they were too old for. When Zee's boyfriend Bones later pays a visit, he recalls the time Nebbercracker stole his kite, as well as relating rumors of him cannibalizing his wife.

River Cruise Prices Explained: Europe, the U S. and Beyond

More days means more to discover, with extension packages you can add before or after your Viking cruise or cruisetour. Enjoy additional days to explore your embarkation or disembarkation city, or see a new destination altogether with a choice of exciting cities.Pre & Post Cruise Extensions vary by itinerary and are subject to change. Many of the activities on board Viking's ocean ships revolve around "cultural enrichment," to use a phrase often used by Viking executives. On any given day, you might find an expert on one of the destinations you're visiting lecturing in the theater, or a classical musician performing in the central atrium, known as The Living Room. The ships also offer some traditional entertainment, including production shows with singers and dancers. Viking's bigger ocean ships also have poolside grills that serve made-to-order gourmet hamburgers and other grill items.

Those produce about 700 million bottles of wine a year, so expect sips of Saint-Emilion, Medoc and Sauternes on a Viking Bordeaux river cruise. One of the best Viking River Cruises in Europe takes place on the Rhine River and the scenery is spectacular. Rising in the Alps and meandering 820 miles through Switzerland, France, Germany and the Netherlands, the Rhine is lined with fairy-tale castles and wine-growing villages.

The ultimate guide to Viking cruise ships and itineraries

Six more nearly identical vessels are scheduled to debut between 2024 and 2028, and Viking has options with a shipyard to order four more of the ships for delivery in 2029 and 2030. Typical 10-day cruises start and finish in the Atlantic-facing city of Porto, where famous port wine warehouses line the waterfront. Learning the secrets of port production is a highlight on Viking Douro cruises, as are the lush green landscapes that stretch all the way to the Spanish border. From there, the line offers a scenic motorcoach tour to honey-colored Salamanca, Spain's oldest university town (try to spot the tiny frog hidden in the university's facade).

Just because a walking tour is included it doesn't mean you have to take it. Viking has many inclusions on their river cruises, although not everything. On your trip, you'll get at least one shore excursion per port included in the fare, as well as bottled water, all meals plus wine and beer at lunch and dinner, as well as onboard programming and entertainment. Viking also offers lots of balcony cabins and suites on its river ships, something that isn't always the case in the river cruise business, where space on vessels is at a premium. Unlike its ocean ships, Viking's river ships aren't all-balcony-cabin vessels. On all river cruises, guests are offered one complimentary shore excursion at every destination.

Afterward, we took a walking tour of Vienne with its lovely church and Roman temple. But that’s not to say younger cruisers will feel out of place. Another great feature of a Viking River cruise is the ship's electrical outlets. But having to pack additional converters or keeping your fingers crossed that your curling iron won't blow up is a nice feature. On the Viking ships you'll find American plugs (as well as European), making it easy to plug in your electronics. Viking can be defined as much by what it isn't as what it is.

Excursions on a Viking River Cruise

Food, wine and cultural treasures are among the many pleasures on Viking's Seine River cruises. The Seine runs through the heart of Paris and Viking has an exclusive central docking location just a short walk from the Eiffel Tower. As you leave the romantic City of Light, look out for a replica of the Statue of Liberty. About 15 minutes before each excursion, there is an announcement to remind guests that it is almost time to leave and to remember the listening devices. River cruises are designed for the mature traveler as Viking guests must be 18 years old.

Which Viking River Cruise Ships Sail France on the Seine?

So, now that you know how much Viking Cruises cost, you can decide which one suits your budget best. Whichever concept you go for, rest assured that it will be a trip to remember. It’s a pretty straightforward setup, making basically every cruise with Viking worth every penny. Check out this page for a detailed overview of all available Viking River Cruises.

You'll find Viking's ocean ships in other key cruise destinations as well, such as Alaska, the Caribbean and Panama Canal, Canada and New England, South America, Asia and Australia. As noted above, almost all of Viking's river ships are of the same basic design and are known as the Longships — a reference to the historic vessels used by Vikings in the Middle Ages. Viking currently operates 11 ocean ships, nine of which are nearly identical. Any trip to France is perfect for food and wine lovers, and one of the best Viking River Cruises in Europe for foodies and oenophiles is in Bordeaux. Itineraries include the Garonne, Girande and Dordogne Rivers, all of which wind their way through rolling hills home to more than 9,000 wineries.

All this is included in your Viking World Cruise. Up to $60,000 value per couple.

Clean lines and beautiful, modern decor are featured throughout the vessel. Viking goes out of its way to make you feel special, especially if you're celebrating an important event. You'll also find important information such as currency, language, and flight details if you booked with Viking. At the bottom of this post I share my exact trip itinerary.

Ten-night "Greek Odyssey" voyages to the Greek Islands start at $3,999 per person. That works out to roughly $800 per day for a couple sharing a room. Some of the line's more exotic sailings, such as its expedition trips to Antarctica, cost even more. Fourteen-night Antarctica trips start at $13,995 per person — about $2,000 per day for a couple.

On Viking river cruises, wines are included at lunch and dinner and are poured liberally. This is one area where the line strives to provide regional offerings. There are times when river cruise ships have to have guests disembark a ship and then board a sister ship. Sometimes the river water levels may be too low in spots (due to the lack of sufficient rain during summer) or there is another issue (like a broken lock) necessitating the change.

All of that makes the Viking's Rhine cruises a great choice for first-time European river cruisers and returning visitors alike. While it's not what we'd consider a "foodie" experience and doesn't have as much regional focus as you might expect, Viking's river ships have menus that appeal to a wide range of palates. You'll always be able to find staples such as prime rib, chicken and salmon. But the stars of the ships are the two Explorer Suites, both located on the upper deck at the back of the ship. These cabins come in at 445 square feet -- some of the largest on the rivers -- and not only have a separate bedroom and living areas, but a wraparound balcony. Having a step-out balcony on a European river ship is not a given.

A secondary pool area with an infinity pool is at the back of each of the ships. What they are is eminently functional, with storage in all the right places, lots of outlets for charging your devices and lighting right where you need it. We love the reading lights built into the fabric headboards, which are in addition to the lamps on bedside tables. You won't have trouble seeing the pages of the Viking Daily activity newsletter while lying in a Viking cabin bed. Bathrooms in Viking cabins are serene, modernist escapes with luxurious travertine-lined walls, Scandinavian-influenced wood-veneered vanities, shiny white sinks and chrome fixtures. Most Viking passengers are North Americans who are approaching retirement age or already retired.

The company’s chairman, Torstein Hagen, says that “Viking offers its guests the thinking person’s cruise”. This is an obvious major difference from the mainstream cruise lines, with which it competes and which it clearly overclasses. Voted the best ocean cruise line in both 2016 and 2017 by readers of Travel + Leisure, Viking Ocean Cruises hits home with its unique concept. Instead of offering regular, rather superficial cruises like some other cruise lines do, it focuses on authentic cultural experiences.

Seven-night Rhine River or Danube River cruise prices are the most affordable, while France tends to have the most expensive river cruise prices in Europe. This article highlights the European river cruises aboard the Viking Longboats. The sizes of the ships are designed specifically for the rivers they ply (e.g., they need to navigate the sometimes narrow waterways and any locks along the way). Viking ships all sport calming Scandinavian decor and are designed efficiently. The general experience on all Viking River cruise ships is the same, no matter what ship you’re on. However, the information in this article is from our Grand European Tour cruise from Amsterdam to Budapest aboard the Skirnir and Modi (more on the two ships later).
